Our History…

Heartland Back Country Horsemen is a chapter of Back Country Horsemen of Idaho, which is a non-profit organization with 16 chapters spread throughout our state. We have been a chapter of Back Country Horsemen since 1987. We are located in the beautiful, mountainous area of the Idaho, surrounded by National Forests and State Lands providing many miles of trails available for riding.

Our Heartland Chapter covers a large area with members from Donnelly, McCall, New Meadows, Fruitvale, Council, Indian Valley and Cambridge. Some founding members are still active in our chapter.

We continue to work closely with the Payette National Forest in completing various projects such as trail maintenance, bridge repairs, and bog corridor crossings, helping to preserve access to public lands.

If you are interested in maintaining and preserving access to public lands, please join us at any one of our monthly meetings to get acquainted and learn more.

We meet every fourth Tuesday of each month

Why Volunteer...

Volunteerism stands as a cornerstone in the endeavors of Back Country Horsemen, playing a pivotal role in our commitment to sustaining the use of pack and saddle stock in the backcountry. Embedded within our mission statement is a central focus on collaborating with government agencies to uphold the maintenance and management of public lands.

Devoting our time and resources, we actively contribute to the preservation of open access to public lands for recreational stock use. This dedication affords us a meaningful presence at decision-making tables, where our influence shapes the policies governing pack access to public lands. The significance of engaging in dialogue with public lands managers, informed by our volunteer service, cannot be emphasized enough.

Our volunteer efforts encompass trail maintenance, travel time considerations, stock use monitoring, equipment hauling logistics, educational initiatives, and more. By tracking these aspects, we not only contribute to the immediate well-being of the backcountry but also position ourselves as informed advocates.

Back Country Horsemen, through their volunteer contributions, wield influence in policy discussions, ensuring the continued accessibility of trails for both current and future generations.

Join us in preserving the beauty and accessibility of our backcountry trails.
